From Old Bangers to Big Business

In the exclusive interview, titled ‘Life is an adventure, Emma shares the story of her early years growing up in Suffolk. From “ragging around” in old cars across farm fields to captaining school sports teams, her boldness and courage were evident from a young age.

But her path to becoming a successful agency director wasn’t a straight line. Leaving school with just two GCSEs above a grade C, Emma’s early career was a whirlwind of diverse experiences. She waitressed on the Thames (serving the likes of Rowan Atkinson and Madonna), travelled to the other side of the world to support her sister and even narrowly escaped what sounds like an Australian book-selling cult!

These early adventures taught her the value of hard work and the importance of connecting with people from all walks of life. As Emma notes in the article, her ability to talk to anyone has always been her greatest strength.

Building Ascender Creative

The feature also dives into Emma’s professional milestones, tracing her journey from a junior account manager to co-founding Catapult Design in 2003 with Pete Jenkins. Through hard work and a natural ability to build relationships, the agency quickly grew, eventually evolving into Trebuchet Creative and, in 2023, merging with Propeller Design to become Ascender Creative.

Today, alongside co-directors Pete Jenkins and Simon Milldown, Emma is helping to lead Ascender into its next chapter. As a leading brand strategy agency, Ascender is built on the same principles that have guided Emma’s career: big thinking, exceptional craft and a relentless drive to grow.

Whether we are acting as a brand positioning agency to help clients find their unique voice, delivering high-impact marketing campaigns, or providing bespoke web design and custom website development, our goal is always to elevate the brands we work with.

“I still want to grow and develop things,” Emma says in the interview. “There’s still that fight in me and I will do whatever it takes.”
